Tata Motors is among India’s premier automobile manufacturers. Tata Motors is primarily known for manufacturing and marketing passenger and commercial vehicles. The Mumbai-headquartered firm is a subsidiary of the Tata Group, one of India's largest business conglomerates. The firm’s story began on September 1, 1945, when it was set up as Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO). The objective of the company was to manufacture locomotives and other heavy engineering products. Initially, the company was engaged in the production of locomotives and engineering products. In 1988, Tata Motors entered the passenger vehicle market and launched its first passenger car - TataMobile. 1991 was a significant year for Tata Motors as it launched its first indigenous passenger vehicle - Tata Sierra. In 1992, Tata Motors introduced its first station wagon Tata Estate in the Indian market. In 1998, Tata Motors launched Tata Indica which was India’s first fully indigenous passenger car. In the same year, Tata Motors launched Tata Safari. In 2002, Tata Motors launched Tata Indigo which would go on to become one of its highest-selling models. In 2003, the company rebranded and officially changed its name from TELCO to Tata Motors. In 2004, Tata Motors acquired South Korean truck manufacturer Daewoo Commercial Vehicles Company. In 2005, Tata Motors purchased a controlling stake in the Spanish bus and coach manufacturer Hispano Carrocera. In 2008, Tata Motors acquired the Jaguar Land Rover businesses from Ford Motor Company for a net consideration of US $2.3 billion. In 2019, Tata Motors launched its first electric car - Nexon EV. As of March 2022, Tata Motors had sold over 10 lakh vehicles across segments. The company had employee strength of over 50,000. The company also operates in Europe, Africa, and South America.
