Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited is among India’s leading healthcare companies. The company is headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Apollo Hospitals is primarily known as a hospital chain with its units spread across the country. The story of the company dates back to 1983 when it was founded by Indian entrepreneur Prathap C. Reddy. The company began its journey as a single 150 bed unit in Chennai. At that time, Apollo Hospitals was the first private company to offer corporate healthcare in India. In the same year, Apollo Pharmacy started its journey. Within two years, Apollo Hospitals conducted 100 cardiac surgeries. 1988 was the year when Apollo Hospitals started expanding and opened another unit in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. In the 1990s, Apollo Hospitals expanded rapidly, opening new units in Delhi, Madurai and Vizag. The company would also expand its pharmacy network. By 2001, Apollo Hospitals conducted 100 bone marrow transplants. In 2002, Apollo Hospitals launched SACHi, the acronym for Saving a Child’s Heart Initiative. The initiative is aimed at providing pediatric cardiac care to needy children. In 2022, Apollo Hospitals also launched Apollo Clinics franchisee. These were multi-specialty clinics aimed at bringing healthcare closer to patients’ home. 2004 saw the launch of Apollo Hospital’s medical journal named Apollo Medicine and a mother and childcare facility named Apollo Cradle. In 2005, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi emerged as the first hospital in India to receive accreditation from JCI, USA. Following this, a number of hospitals run by Apollo Hospitals also received accreditation from JCI, USA. 2007 was the year when Apollo Hospitals and German insurance major Munich Re came together to form a Joint venture called Apollo DKV Insurance. DKV Deutsche Krankenversicherung AG was a part of Munich Re. The JV was later renamed as Apollo Munich Health Insurance. 2015 was the year when the company expanded its portfolio with the launch of Apollo HomeCare, Ask Apollo and Apollo Diagnostics. 2020 was the year when the company sold its stake in Apollo Munich Health Insurance to HDFC. Apollo Hospital’s pharmacy business was renamed Apollo HealthCo in 2021 after it merged with the company's digital healthcare business. In 2022, Apollo Hospitals partnered with Imperial Hospital Ltd in order to expand its presence in Bangladesh. In the same year, Apollo Hospitals entered into collaboration with The Clinic by Cleveland Clinic, U.S.A in order to facilitate international second opinion services for its patients.

Apollo Hospitals operates the largest private hospital network in the country. These hospitals provide tertiary, secondary and super specialty care to patients across India. As of Dec 2022, the firm operated 71 hospitals across India. It has strength of over 10, 000+ doctors and 10, 000+ beds. Apollo HealthCo pharmacies are spread across 21 states and 4 union territories. It operates over 5000 pharmacies across India. Over 7000 doctors are part of the company’s digital network. Apart from hospitals, Apollo Hospitals also operates 291 primary clinics, 104 dental clinics, 53 sugar clinics, 25 birthing centers along with approximately 1500 diagnostic collection centres and 109 dialysis centres as of Dec, 2022.
